If there was a way to get the software install itself I could try everything on Win7 in compatibility mode. This whole system was never meant to even work on XP but I lucked out upgrading the original Win2000 install. Then they are nice enough to lock the software down with USB keys as well. The only thing they gave system owners are CDs which contain ghost images of the entire configured install OS and all. The lane system is packaged as a whole and they locked down everything they could to ensure you had to spend more money with them for repairs etc. The issue with the software is it is not available as a standalone install. They could care less about the license since it is end of life. I have kept the link throughout this mess and it has let me activate this license on a half dozen different machines so far.

You can activate XP via the phone authentication, which actually just sends a text link to the web based manual activation. Here's hoping that converting it will be the worst of the mess. Right now I have it running in VMware Workstation and will be moving on to testing everything. Update: so I tried multiple suggestions and the only thing that has worked so far is disk2vhd.

Or if you have a tip to get 6.2 to run on XP Pro SP1 32-bit I would gladly take that as well. Now this is freely available software so I am hoping that someone has an older version they could provide and save me a lot of hair pulling, at my age I don't have a lot to spare. I had hoped I could find an older version that was still compatible like version 5 for example but the VMware website provides pages for older versions but every download link simply starts the 6.2 download. First thing I tried to do and even spent days trying to fix it to work on SP2 and even SP3.Īnyway, I tried loading VCenter Standalone Converter 6.2 to convert this to run on a newer host running VMware Workstation, but 6.2 fails to initialize. Can't even bump it up to XP SP2 without breaking it. Now before anyone asks, this is the absolute newest I can get the OS without breaking every piece of old software on it. One of the long overdue projects is virtualizing the ancient Windows XP lane server. So one of my clients runs a bowling alley and during this shutdown we are doing some much needed network maintenance.
